While I'm gone...

Prayer is the language

Leland Francisco photo
I've been away from blogging because I'm finishing up a book as my deadline draws near. In the meantime, I wanted to share with you an online devotional I've been using. It comes from Jesuit priests in Dublin, Ireland, and it's quite Celtic in its approach to God.

If you try it, I'd love to know what you think. Leave a comment here for me.

Ellis Island Pictures

This is as much for me as for you, but I hope you find it interesting. I'm comparing historical pictures of Ellis Island with ones I took. All of the historical photographs here came from the NYPL digital gallery.

Similar view, possibly of the same side of this building, although I'm not sure.

It's interesting to note, however, that what we have today was restored after decades of neglect. There is still much to be restored on Ellis Island. You can help. Go to the Save Ellis Island web site and donate. Check to see if your employer is a matching donor as well.

Immigrant Stories

I just finished When We Were Strangers by Pamela Schoenewaldt. It's the story of a young girl who, with no options for her future, leaves her small mountain village in Italy for America. She is totally unprepared but through all her challenges and suffering grief for both those from the Old Country and those she met in the New World, she learns and grows, adapts and rises to challenges. I love these kinds of stories. That's why I'm writing them! ;-)

Do you love them as well? You can join this reading challenge. Click on the picture. I signed up!
